A Star is Torn
An accurate representation of the hit stage show of the same name, this 1980 album contains most of the songs and some of the linking dialogue. Accompanied by Tony Ansell and Dale Ringland in the original two-piano arrangements, Robyn Archer sings a heap of hits from the great pop divas of the past. The original impetus for this show was for the musically untrained Archer to pay tribute to the singers she had learned from - by listening to their records. She then discovered that all her virtual mentors/heroines had died before they reached 46 years old , and the show became not only a musical tribute but a poetic treatise on women, power, fame and its contradictions.

"Ms Archer is at full stretch in what amounts to an astonishing tour de force of insight and characterisation"
The Age
"It is Archer's talent as an actress - her ability to convey the character of each artist, that makes A Star is Torn much more than a series of impersonations... Archer makes us care about each star and despair at their tragic end"
